SPRINGFIELD – Donald Golden, a dedicated pro-life witness who prayed a few times a week in front of Planned Parenthood in Springfield, died after a brief illness Feb. 23 at the age of 72.

Golden is credited with directing countless women through the years to pro-life pregnancy care centers. According to pro-life advocates who spent time with Golden, women would often stop to speak with him about their situation, and he would give them brochures from places like Bethlehem House and Clearway Clinic.

“Don Golden was a longtime pro-life advocate in our diocese as well as sidewalk counselor. In all kinds of weather, Don could be found witnessing to the sanctity of life by his example and his prayer,” said Father Daniel Pacholec, the director of pro-life activities for the Diocese of Springfield. “My hope is that his legacy will motivate many more to follow his example by supporting life,” he said.

Golden grew up in Longmeadow and received a sociology degree from American International College. He worked for 28 years at the Department for Transitional Assistance and at the West Springfield Senior Center for 22 years. He most recently worked part-time at St. Mary Academy in Longmeadow.

Golden, who grew up in the Jewish faith, converted to Catholicism. He was a member of the diocesan Pro-Life Commission, the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus Council 5406, and the Third Order Carmelites.

A funeral Mass will be held Thursday, March 2 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Parish in Longmeadow. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Mary Academy in Longmeadow.
