SPRINGFIELD – Most people know someone who suffers from some sort of addiction. There’s no question it’s a difficult topic to discuss.
On Saturday, March 11, from 8:30 a.m. through 3:30 p.m., a daylong symposium, “Addiction in a Post-COVID World: A Pastoral Response,” will be held at Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee.
Local clergy, staff, and volunteers from parishes and schools, as well as others who want to learn compassionate ways to reach those suffering from addiction, are invited to attend the event.
“Bishop William Byrne and Elms College both recognized the need in our diocese to help those suffering with the disease of addiction,” said Celeste Labbe, director of faith formation for the Diocese of Springfield and coordinator of the event. “This day is for anyone else who recognizes that need and wants to help.”
Several keynote speakers will present during the day:
- Dr. Wayne Gavryck, an addiction medicine specialist, will speak about the nature of addiction. He’ll also speak about the possibility of recovery and the problem of addiction facing communities in western Massachusetts.
- Scott Weeman, founder of Catholic in Recovery, will share his personal story of recovery and also the work that he does with parishes in helping them support those suffering from addiction.
- “We’ll also hear from Deacon Dave Bergeron, Sister of St. Joseph Melinda Pellerin and Father Mark Stelzer, who will share their experiences in working with people with addiction,” said Labbe.
The day is free and open to the public. Attendees can bring their own lunch or purchase food at the Elms College dining hall.
“It will conclude with Mass at the end of the day and we really hope to see everyone there at this very special and informative event,” said Labbe.
Attendees can sign up by emailing c.labbe@diospringfield.org or by calling the Office of Faith Formation at 413-452-0841.
