OBITUARY: Sister Catherine Hayes, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Sister of St. Joseph Catherine Hayes (formerly Sister Catherine Edmund), 96, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham, Mass., on Saturday, Feb. 4. Born in Springfield, she was the daughter of Edmond and Catherine (Fitzgerald) Hayes.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Holy Name Parish, Springfield in 1948. She graduated from Cathedral High School, Springfield. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and a master’s in business education from Boston University.

She taught business courses at Cathedral High from 1950-1993. She also served as department chair. Upon her retirement from Cathedral High School, she assisted in the Alumnae Library at College of Our Lady of the Elms until 2000. In 2006, she was honored by Cathedral High School for her valuable service for over 40 years. She retired to St. Joseph Residence at Mont Marie in 2008.

She is predeceased by her sisters Madeline Hayes and Anna Marie Ferris (Donald). In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her twin sister, Mary.

All services will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church, Holyoke, Mass., on Friday, Feb. 10.  She will be waked at 9 a.m., with a prayer service at 9:30. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
