St. Rose Parish community dedicates new Veterans Memorial Park at cemetery

REGIONAL
Staff report

CHICOPEE – The parish community of St. Rose de Lima in Chicopee dedicated a new Veterans Memorial Park at the St. Rose Cemetery located on Olsen Street. The dedication was held on Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m.

“A group of folks in the parish wanted to have a memorial for veterans in our cemetery at St. Rose Cemetery,” said Father William Tourigny, the pastor of St. Rose de Lima Parish.

“We built this memorial as a tribute to all veterans. We have six flags, one for each of the services, including the new space force,” Father Tourigny said.

The committee raised $60,000 to construct the memorial, in part, by selling memorial bricks, which are still available for purchase. Donations also came in from local businesses and groups including Big Y and AMVETS Post 12 in Chicopee. Permanent lighting for the flags has been provided by Chicopee Electric Light Company.

“It’s to recognize all veterans,” Father Tourigny said. “People will see that the people of St. Rose and our friends have never forgotten the service of American veterans.”

The Chicopee Comprehensive High School marching band provided patriotic music for the ceremony. Chicopee Mayor John L. Vieau spoke addressed those gathered. He was joined by several state and city officials.

Pavers are still available for purchase. More information can be found at sterose.org.
