STOCKBRIDGE – Marian Father Matthew Tomeny has been named the new rector of the National Shrine of The Divine Mercy in Stockbridge. He succeeds Marian Father Anthony Gramlich, who now serves as vice rector of shrine liturgy.
According to a news article on the shrine’s website, shrineofdivinemercy.org, Father Tomeny, 28, is a native of Florida and was ordained to the priesthood last year. He has served at St. Patrick Parish in Yorkville, Ill., and at St. Mary Parish in Plano, Ill. He also is a lieutenant (junior grade) in the U.S. Naval Reserve and “in a few years will be called to active duty as a chaplain in the U.S. Navy,” according to the news article.
“Although I’ll miss the parishes and school in Illinois, I’m happy to be part of the National Shrine’s mission of sharing the Divine Mercy message and devotion,” Father Tomeny said. “With my term taking place during the USCCB’s three-year National Eucharistic Revival, I’m excited to have the National Shrine take part in fostering a greater love of our Merciful Lord present in the Most Holy Eucharist.”
“I look forward to meeting many pilgrims from all walks of life and places and hearing their experience of Jesus, the Divine Mercy,” Father Tomeny added.
“We’re excited to welcome Father Matthew back to Eden Hill,” said Marian Father Chris Alar, interim provincial superior and director of the Association of Marian Helpers. “His youthful enthusiasm and love of the Eucharist will enhance the pastoral care we offer to pilgrims from all over the world who visit the national shrine to experience God’s loving mercy.”
