OBITUARY: Sister Janice Molloy, SSJ

SPRINGFIELD — Sister of St. Joseph Janice Molloy (formerly Sister Elizabeth James), 96, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield on Jan. 24.

A native of Auburn, Mass., she was the daughter of James and Gertrude (Daley) Molloy. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Joseph Parish in Auburn in 1943. She graduated from St. Peter High School in Worcester, Mass., and earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee.

She taught at St. Thomas the Apostle and Immaculate Conception schools in West Springfield and Holy Name School in Springfield. The majority of her teaching career was at Cathedral High School (CHS) in Springfield where she served as biology teacher in the Science Department for 40 years.

She is a 2013 recipient of the St. Joseph Award given by Cathedral High School for her outstanding commitment to CHS. Upon retirement, she resided at St. Joseph Residence at Mont Marie in Holyoke before moving to West Springfield.

In addition to her sisters in community, she leaves to cherish her memory her friend Barbara Begley and generations of beloved nephews, nieces, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers John, Edmund, Donald, Robert and Paul; and her sisters, Mary Sullivan, Kathleen Molloy, and Sister of St. Joseph Elizabeth Molloy (formerly Sister James Gertrude).

Services for Sister Molloy will be held Jan. 27. Burial will be at 9 a.m. at Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke. A Memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke, with COVID protocols observed.
