OBITUARY: Sister Ann Butler, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Sister of St. Joseph Ann Butler (formerly Sister Catherine John), 90, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham on May 8. Born in Pittsfield, she was the daughter of John and Kathleen (Hagerty) Butler.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Our Lady of Hope Parish, Springfield, in 1946. She attended Our Lady of Hope School and graduated from Cathedral High School in Springfield. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee.

She ministered in the Diocese of Springfield as a teacher at St. Patrick School in Chicopee and Cathedral High School in Springfield. In the Diocese of Providence, R.I., she taught at St. Joseph School in Newport; Sacred Heart School in Pawtucket; and Bishop Keough High School in Pawtucket. She also was involved in the Intercessory Prayer Ministry of Providence.

In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her sisters, Kathleen Butler and Sister of St. Joseph Winifred Butler; her sister-in-law, Monica Butler; and several generations of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Sally, John, and Kevin.

A private burial will be held at Mont Marie Cemetery, with a Memorial Mass to be held at later date.
