CHICOPEE – Students at St. Stanislaus School, here, began their annual Thanksgiving canned food collection the first week of November. The collection is sponsored by the Student Council and officers Nicholas Kendra, Julia Fettes, Olivia Dobronski, Jordyn Hunter, and Emma Corridan.
The goal of this year’s can drive was 2,500 cans. Students said they hoped to put the school’s principal, Franciscan Sister of St. Joseph Cecelia Haier, out of her office and into the hallway because of all the cans piled in her office.
Each classroom had individual goals for their class based on seven cans per student in each grade. For every 25 cans collected, they received a feather to put onto their class’s turkey picture in the school hallway. If they surpassed their class goal, a golden feather was added onto their turkey picture for every 25 cans over the class goal.
Students have since surpassed the goal in many grades, and collected a total of approximately 4,500 cans, topping last year’s collection of approximately 3,500.
