SPRINGFIELD – Bishop William D. Byrne is joining Pope Leo XIV in appealing to all to come to the aid of the victims of the two powerful earthquakes in Venezuela. Bishop Byrne is urging Catholics to support the efforts by donating to Catholic Relief Services which works directly with Caritas Venezuela and Jesuit Refugee Service.

“These catastrophic earthquakes have shattered so many lives. The destruction and death toll are beyond devastating. As we pray for these victims and their families, I also ask that you prayerfully consider helping them financially,” said Bishop Byrne.

“Catholic Relief Services, Caritas Venezuela and Jesuit Refugee Service have mobilized extensive relief in the country by providing families food, shelter and medical care. We can help from here. Please consider donating,” said Bishop Byrne.

The twin earthquakes struck the country June 24, claiming the lives of more than 2400 people with tens of thousands still missing, according to news reports.

The bishop is also encouraging parishes to take up a special collection in the coming weeks to assist. The fastest way to donate is through crs.org
