CHICOPEE – With just days before Thanksgiving, the students of St. Stanislaus School in Chicopee made a generous donation of more than thousands of cans of food to Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry in Chicopee. The student council set a goal to collect 2500 cans of food, but far surpassed that collecting 3500 cans.
“This can drive is run by our student council in grades 4-8. This drive aligns with the statement that we believe our students are servant leaders for today and tomorrow,” said St. Stanislaus School principal Katherine Rorrio.
“It assists our school community in understanding the global community where we are all neighbors and members of God’s family. Our school theme this year is ‘Go Make Disciples of All Nations.’ Our students are wonderful examples of disciples going out and making a difference in the community,” she said.
The food was loaded on a truck which delivered the items to Lorraine’s Kitchen on Pendexter Avenue on Monday, Nov. 24. to help feed families in need.
“Our school goal for the 2025 can drive was 2,500 cans, which meant that every student at our school needed to bring in 10 cans for us to reach our goal. Each day along with the rest of the student council. we would collect cans from each class, watching different classes bring in more and more cans each day,” said Matthew, student council president.
“Once we hit our goal, nobody thought that as a school we would be able to bring in another 1,000 cans. So, when we managed to hit that number it was truly something amazing. This event at our school is very important to so many people because without our help many people would be hungry on Thanksgiving, and nobody should ever be hungry on Thanksgiving,” he said.
Lorraine’s Kitchen, which is a recipient of the Annual Catholic Appeal, has been helping families in the Chicopee area for more than 40 years.
