Bishop Byrne to celebrate Divine Mercy Mass for the Holy Father
REGIONAL
Staff report
SPRINGFIELD – Bishop William D. Byrne will celebrate the 2nd Sunday of Easter Mass for the Holy Father this Saturday, April 26 at 4 p.m. at St. Michael’s Cathedral in Springfield. All are invited to attend.
The Mass will be recorded and broadcast Sunday morning at 10 a.m. on “Chalice of Salvation,” which airs on WWLP-22 News. During the Mass, intentions will be offered for the Holy Father and for the Universal Church.
Earlier this week, Bishop Byrne released a statement on the passing of Pope Francis.
“I was saddened to learn of the Holy Father’s passing this morning in Rome. Pope Francis was a clarion voice for the poor of the world, and all those on the periphery of society, challenging us all to see in them the face of God,” stated Bishop Byrne who met the Holy Father in 2023.
“I will be forever blessed by the memory of my meeting with the Holy Father two years ago. At that meeting, responding to a question I asked, he reminded those present that ‘everyone, everyone, everyone, everyone should be welcomed. We are all brothers and sisters seeking the Lord.’ As the Universal Church marks our Jubilee Year of Hope and as pilgrims on this journey of hope, may the humble manner in which Pope Francis conducted his papacy serve as a model for us all,” he said.
The funeral Mass of Pope Francis will be celebrated April 26 in St. Peter’s Square. All flags will fly at half-staff out of respect for the passing of Pope Francis.
