SPRINGFIELD – St. Michael’s Cathedral was filled with praise and worship this week as musician Tony Melendez performed uplifting concerts on Tuesday evening in English and Wednesday evening in Spanish. What made the event especially moving was the sight of Melendez, born without arms and with a clubbed foot, skillfully playing the guitar with his feet.
Originally from Nicaragua, Melendez and his family immigrated to the United States so he could undergo corrective surgery. At 16, he taught himself to play the guitar, a skill that would one day bring him national recognition when he performed for then Pope John Paul II during the pontiff’s visit to Los Angeles in 1987. His words to a young Melendez were, “My wish for you is that you continue giving hope.”
“His words have stuck with me forever,” said Melendez. “You see a guy playing the guitar with his feet and at first it may seem awkward. Then you become inspired and realize—wow, if he can do that, maybe I can too. One simple thing can change your whole life. For me, I sang for a Pope, and it changed mine.”
Following the hour-long concert, Melendez led the benediction in Latin during adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, with the congregation joining in. He continued to play and sing, creating a deeply spiritual and emotional atmosphere.
Tony Melendez Ministries, a non-profit organization, is dedicated to spreading compassion and hope through music and personal testimony. Melendez travels the world sharing his remarkable story of resilience, faith, and triumph over adversity. He performs at concerts, conferences, retreats, schools, and other venues, and has released several albums. He currently lives in Branson, Missouri, with his wife. They have two adult children.
