OBITUARY: Sister Catherine Alaimo, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Sister Catherine Alaimo (John Constance), 91, beloved member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Bethany Health Care Center, Framingham, Mass. on Feb. 16. Born in Thompsonville, Conn., she was the daughter of John and Constance (Sullivan) Alaimo.
Sister Alaimo entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Holy Cross Parish in Springfield in 1964. She graduated from Cathedral High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee and a mater’s degree in education from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
Sister Alaimo taught at St. Michael School, Northampton; Our Lady of Hope School, Springfield; and Blessed Sacrament School, Holyoke. She served as principal at Holy Family School, Springfield. She was curriculum coordinator for the Springfield Diocesan Schools’ Office and education coordinator at the Grey House in Springfield, and conducted adult education classes at the Urban League of Springfield. Sister Alaimo was also the facilitator for the SSJ Quilters for Griffin’s Friends.
In addition to her sisters in community, she leaves her sister, Elizabeth Alaimo, several nieces, nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Constance, her brothers Joseph, John (Ann) and James (Faith Mary).
All services for Sister Alaimo will take place in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke. on Monday, Feb. 24. The wake will be at 9 a.m. with a prayer service at 9:30 a.m., followed by the Liturgy of Christian Burial. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke.
