OBITUARY: Sister Marilyn Logan, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Sister of St. Joseph Marilyn Logan (formerly Sister Mary Arthur), 95, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Framingham, Mass., on April 7, 2024. Born in Springfield, Mass., she was the daughter of Arthur J. and Mary H. (Cashman) Logan.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Holy Cross Parish, Springfield in 1952. She graduated from Classical High School, Springfield. She earned a bachelor of science from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and a master of science degree in biology from the University of Detroit.

She served at both Cathedral and Holyoke Catholic high schools and was principal of Our Lady of Hope School, Springfield. She went on to teach at Western New England College, Springfield; and then Elms College. She also served as case manager and supervisor for Greater Springfield Senior Services, a pastoral minister at Holy Cross Parish in Springfield, and a certified home health aide for the Pioneer Valley Visiting Nurses Association. She received her certificate as a residence service coordinator from the MASS Association of Resident Service Coordinators (MARSH) while serving in that role at Emerson House, Longmeadow.

In addition to her formal ministries, she did much volunteer service. Among her favorites were her 12 years as a reader for Radio Reading for the Blind program, and her many services at Mont Marie. There she served as a substitute driver, companion to sisters in the Mont Marie Health Care Center and “D” Building, participation in liturgies as a reader, and minister of the Eucharist to the sick. In her early years she volunteered at Heart House Shelter for Battered Women, the Jefferson Street Shelter for Women and Children, and the Open Pantry Soup Kitchen.

In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her brother Robert Logan and his wife Ann, and sister-in-law, Polly Logan and 17 nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Dr. Arthur Logan.

All services will take place in Blessed Sacrament Church, 1945 Northampton Street, Holyoke, on Friday, April 12. She will be waked from 9-9:30 a.m. with a prayer service at 9:30. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
