OBITUARY: Evelyn Margaret Gorman, DHM

HOLYOKE – Evelyn Margaret Gorman, Daughter of the Heart of Mary (DHM), 102, was born on Long Island, New York on May 5, 1921. She was an only child born to Lillian Margaret (Carroll) Gorman and John Joseph Gorman, both of New York State.

She went to boarding school and attended Mother Cabrini High School in Manhattan N.Y., and Canisius College in Buffalo N.Y. where she studied economics and management. Later, she earned a master’s degree in theology at St. John’s University in Massachusetts.

Before entering the Daughters of the Heart of Mary in 1953 on 20th Street in New York, she worked in management training with Southwestern Bell (ATT), which later became Verizon.

Over the years she worked as a teacher at Nardin Academy in Buffalo and served multiple terms as a DHM superior to her community members in various locations of New York and in Massachusetts. She moved to the Marian Center in Holyoke in 2003, where she resided throughout the rest of her life.

She is survived by many friends and relatives, including cousins Sue Stafford Smith and mother Evelyn, Ed Miller, and friends Connie Anestis, Adriana Albano, Susan Brooks, and many others. Visitation will be held at the Marian Center on Tuesday, Dec. 19 from 1-2:30 p.m., followed by Mass at 3 p.m. Burial will be in St. Jerome’s Cemetery on Wednesday, Dec. 20 at 10 a.m.
