OBITUARY: Sister Claudette Samson, SSJ

AGAWAM – Sister of St. Joseph Claudette Samson (formerly Sister Lucille Marie), 85, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died on Feb. 4 at Heritage North Nursing Facility in Agawam. Born in New Bedford, Mass., she was the daughter of Joseph and Ida (Allaire) Samson.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of LePuy in Fall River, Mass., from St. Theresa Parish, New Bedford in 1956 and became a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield when the two congregations merged in 1974. She attended high school with the Gray Nuns in Montreal, Canada.

She served at Blessed Sacrament, St. Jean Baptist, and St. Matthew convents in Fall River, and St. Joseph Convent, New Bedford. She was community driver for the Blessed Sacrament Convent, Fall River and did domestic work at the Oblate Retreat House, Hudson, N.H. Later she served the congregation as appointment driver.

She was predeceased by her brothers, Maurice (Cecile), Lionel, Alfred (Margaret), and Edward Samson; her sisters, Cecile Douglas (Richard), Dora Sherman (Kenneth), Rita Meredios (John), Robia Marshall (William), and Flora Bridges (George). In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her sister-in-law Cecile Samson and several nieces and nephews. 

All services will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke, on Thursday, Feb. 9. She will be waked at 9 at a.m. with a prayer service at 9:30. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
