SPRINGFIELD – Mercy Medical Center held a special commissioning ceremony to formally welcome Montez Carter as president and chief executive officer of Trinity Health Of New England on Nov. 3.

Similar commissioning ceremonies were held over several days at Johnson Memorial Hospital, St. Francis Hospital, both in Connecticut; and St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Ga. Each ceremony included a formal blessing, musical selection, and gift presentation.

Carter took on the role of CEO on Oct. 3. He succeeds Dr. Reginald J. Eadie, who held the top leadership role at Trinity Health Of New England since 2018 and now serves as senior vice president of physician enterprise development for Livonia, Michigan-based Trinity Health.

Carter began his career as a pharmacist, later transitioning to hospital leadership. He joined St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, Georgia, in 2010 as vice president of operations. He later served as president of St. Mary’s Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro and president of St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, before his most recent position as president and chief executive officer of St. Mary’s Health Care System, which includes three hospitals, a medical group, home health care/hospice agency, outpatient facilities and a retirement community.

Carter was tapped to serve as president and chief executive officer of Trinity Health Of New England following a nationwide search and a unanimous vote of the board of directors’ selection committee.

Carter earned his doctoral degree in pharmacy from the University of Mississippi and his master’s degree in business administration from the University of Alabama. He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Carter also serves on several boards, including the American Hospital Association (AHA), Georgia Hospital Association and the Georgia Alliance of Community Hospitals.

“I welcome this exciting new opportunity and look forward to working with my Trinity Health Of New England colleagues to continue to respond to the needs of those we serve,” said Carter. “My promise is to keep our patients at the center of everything we do. By continuing to embrace innovation and transformation of healthcare delivery, we commit to provide the highest quality care, enhanced access and convenience, and unrivaled patient caring delivered by our devoted healthcare professionals.”
