OBITUARY: Sister Frances Gloster, SSJ

CHICOPEE – Sister of St. Joseph Frances Gloster (formerly Sister Joan Catherine), 80, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died in Chicopee on June 24.

A native of Springfield, she was the daughter of Francis J. and Catherine F. (Ostrowski) Gloster.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Holy Name Parish, Springfield in 1959. She graduated from Cathedral High School, Springfield. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and a master of arts degree in English from Westfield State College.

She served as a teacher in many elementary schools in the Springfield Diocese, as well as at Cathedral High School. She was principal at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Holyoke for four years. She ministered to the people of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Agawam, was director of the Office of Bereavement for the Diocese of Springfield, and worked in the Pastoral Ministry Office of the diocese. She served as the retirement assistant at the St. Joseph Residence and was an ESL tutor at The Gray House.

In addition to her sisters in community, she leaves her sister Mary, a nephew, and a niece. She was predeceased by her parents, her sister Joan and her brother John.

All services will take place at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke on Wednesday June 29. She will be waked from 9-9:45 a.m., with a prayer service at 9:15 a.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke.
