EWTN leads Gabriel Award winners with six awards, one honorable mention

CHICAGO (CNS) — EWTN led all Gabriel Award winners by earning six awards and an honorable mention in the 2021 awards competition, while Family Theater Productions, Shalom Media and the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. and its local and regional affiliates were each recognized five times for their work.

Paulist Father Dave Dwyer, executive editor of the Paulists’ media ministry Busted Halo, received the Gabriels’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

The awards were announced May 19. The Gabriel Awards are administered by the Catholic Media Association, which until last year was known as the Catholic Press Association.

EWTN’s prizes included Television Station of the Year. It won first place in the short film category with “Answer to a Prayer,” and second place with “Padre Pio and Pope Pius XI: A Mysterious Encounter.” EWTN Radio won a first place in the single news story category for “The Miracle Hunter — Cardinal Newman’s Miracle.” Its other first place was for “A Catholic New York Landlord Waived Rent for his 200 Tenants Amid Coronavirus Pandemic” in the category Best Video for Social Media.

It also won second place for best interview with an interview of Australian Cardinal George Pell, and an honorable mention in the category “Hot Topic: Courage Under Fire — English Television” with “Miracles of Padre Pio.”

Family Theater recorded five Gabriel nods, including first place in the documentary film category for “Pray: The Story of Patrick Peyton.” It won another first place for teen-specific content with “Catholic Central,” and a second place in the same category with “Lente Catolico.” In best video for social media, Family Theater took second place with the “Lente Catolico” episode “Los 7 Pecados Capitales” and an honorable mention for the “Catholic Central” episode “Proofs of God.”

CBC won first place in the category “Hot Topic: Courage Under Fire — Audio” with “Finding Strength in the Circle,” and second place with “How to Live a Good Death.” It took another second place prize for best TV website with www.cbckidsnews.ca.

CBC won an honorable mentions in the radio documentary category with the “Unscripted Content” episode “Now or Never: The Journey of Adoption,” and in the single news story category for “Remembering Mr. Yong,” which aired on its “Daybreak Montreal” program.

Shalom Media won first place in the single news story category with “Child of the Eucharist,” and another in the category “Videos Creating Awareness of the Organization” with “Wellspring — Sisters of the Queen,” plus second place in the category “Religious Places — Videos Promoting Attendance” with “Journal — National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help.”

It won an honorable mention in the documentary film category with “Glorious Lives — Angelina Lyaka 1913-1927,” and in the category “Youth Programming — Ongoing Program or Series” category with “God’s Crazy People.”

Religious places — videos promoting attendance: “We Need Each Other — St. Patrick’s in a Time of Pandemic,” Paulist Fathers.

Feature film: “The Clark Sisters: First Ladies of Gospel,” Lifetime.

Documentary, radio: “Rough Translation: Hotel Corona,” NPR.

Series, radio: “NPR’s Mississippi Prisons in Crisis,” NPR.

Youth programming — ongoing program or series: “Brother Francis” titles “The Days of Advent,” “The Kingdom” and “Jesus Is Coming,” Herald Entertainment.

Special or documentary: “Revolution of the Heart: The Dorothy Day Story,” Journey Films.

Hot topic: Courage Under Fire — film: “We Are Called,” Catholic Health Association.

Hot topic: Courage Under Fire — English TV: “Currents News: Virus Shuts Down Brooklyn Churches,” Net-TV.

Best interview: “Change Your Watering Hole” with Deacon Charlie Echeverry, Petrus Development.

Best social media campaign of the year, audio: “#coronakind,” Ideastream.

Guadalupe Radio won the Spanish-language Radio Station of the Year prize; no English-language award was given.
