OBITUARY: Sister Theresa Murtha, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Sister of St. Joseph Theresa Murtha, (formerly Sister Mary Catherine), 93, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham, Mass., on Jan. 9. A native of Pawtucket, R.I., she was the daughter of Mary Catherine Murtha.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Sacred Heart Parish in Pawtucket in 1953. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Pawtucket. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms in Chicopee and a master’s in business education from Boston University.

She taught at Cathedral High School in Springfield and St. Catherine Academy in Newport, R.I. She also served as registrar at the College of Our Lady of the Elms. She taught at the Business School in Providence, R.I., and served as adult education coordinator for the Providence School Department in Providence. She also worked at Geffroy Neurological in Providence.

In addition to her sisters in community, she leaves many friends as well as the staff at Bethany Health Care Center.

Services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12, with burial at 9 a.m. at Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke. A Memorial Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church in Holyoke.
