Richard Shuman, MD, to Lead Mercy’s Physician Network Organization

SPRINGFIELD — Richard Shuman, MD, has been named Senior Vice President of Mercy Medical Center’s Physician Network Organization (PNO). In this position, Dr. Shuman will be responsible for strategic and operational management of our practices within the PNO. As member of the Senior Leadership Team, Dr. Shuman will focus on promoting the delivery of high quality health care services, providing leadership for the effective management of medical resources and staff, and ensuring clinical quality management and improvement activities as we strategically align and integrate our physician practices.

Most recently, Dr. Shuman served as President for RiverBend Medical Group.  Dr. Shuman’s career at RiverBend spanned more than 20 years and he has served in a number of leadership positions including Medical Director of Operations and Chief of Medicine. He has provided consulting services to Baycare PHO in Springfield, and served as Medical Director of Tufts Health Plan in Springfield.   

Board certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Shuman is a member of the Board of Directors for Health New England and serves as Chair of the Baycare Board of Directors. 

Dr. Shuman completed his residency at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire where he also served as Director of Pre-Admission Testing.  Dr. Shuman is a graduate of University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester and Harvard University in Cambridge. During his academic career, Dr. Shuman received a number of awards in recognition of his superior academic achievements.
