Staff report

SPRINGFIELD –Trinity Health-New England announced late Friday, January 8 two major leadership changes involving the Springfield-based Sisters of Providence Health System (SPHS).

Daniel P. Moen, most recently president of Mercy Medical Center and SPHS, has been appointed executive vice president and chief operating officer for Trinity Health-New England, the parent company of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center and Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital in Hartford, Conn., Johnson Memorial Hospital in Stafford Springs, Conn., and SPHS and other subsidiaries.

Simultaneously, Trinity also named as Moen’s replacement Scott A. Wolf, as president of Mercy Medical Center and its affiliated entities. In this role, Dr. Wolf will be responsible for the operational performance of Mercy Medical Center, as well as provide leadership in the execution, management, financial performance and oversight of all hospital operations, and explore opportunities for growth through strategic development initiatives across the system.

In his new role, Moen will be responsible for maximizing the operating performance of Trinity Health-New England and play a key role in influencing strategic direction and market presence of each of the local hospitals within the regional health ministry.

“The role of executive vice president, chief operating officer, is an extremely important position for the success of Trinity Health–New England,” said Christopher M. Dadlez, president and chief executive officer of Trinity Health-New England. “Dan Moen is a highly-respected, experienced executive who has managed complex hospital operations for many years. His proven track record and accomplishments will provide the new regional health ministry with the leadership and talent needed to secure a successful future.”

“I am honored to serve in this important role,” said Moen. “The facilities that comprise Trinity Health-New England share common goals regarding innovation and transformation of care delivery to foster high-quality, efficiency, access to services and cost containment. This commitment, coupled with strategic opportunities for growth, allows us to respond to the needs of those who seek our care and service in Connecticut and Massachusetts.”

For the past five years, Moen has served as president and chief executive officer of SPHS. He has more than 33 years of senior leadership experience in health care in Massachusetts; for 28 of these years he has served as a chief executive officer.

Prior to joining SPHS, Moen served as president and chief executive officer of Heywood Hospital, a 125-bed full-service community hospital based in Gardner, Massachusetts. Before to joining Heywood Hospital, he served for 10 years in progressively responsible leadership positions with Holden Hospital in Holden, Massachusetts, including two years as its president and chief executive officer.

Moen earned a master in health administration degree from Clark University/University of Massachusetts Medical School, a bachelor of science degree in Management from Worcester State College, and an associate in science in radiologic technology degree from Quinsigamond Community College, all in Worcester, Mass.

“This is a time of positive transformation for health care and for Mercy Medical Center and Trinity Health-New England,” said Moen. “I can think of no one more prepared than Scott to take on the challenges and opportunities that these changes will bring in improving the health of the communities we serve. Additionally, having practiced medicine for more than 10 years, Scott brings a unique and valuable perspective to this important position.”

“It is truly an honor to serve in this important role at Mercy Medical Center and in partnership with Trinity Health-New England,” said Dr. Wolf. “We are amidst a pivotal time in health care in the United States. Working together, we will continue to move toward successful population health management initiatives.  As a physician leader, I am committed to the delivery of the ‘triple aim’ of better health, better care and lower costs for our patient population in Massachusetts and Connecticut.”

Dr. Wolf joined SPHS in 2010, serving as senior vice president of medical affairs, chief medical officer and chief operating officer for Mercy Medical and SPHS. During that time, he provided leadership and strategic direction for clinical operations and service line development, quality, risk and patient safety, medical staff credentialing and evaluation, and served as the clinical liaison between the medical staff and senior leadership throughout the organization.

Board-certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, Dr. Wolf has broad clinical and administrative experience in a variety of health care environments. During his prior 10 year association with Hartford Hospital in Hartford, Conn., he served in various capacities including director of clinical operations for ambulatory medicine, director of ambulatory medical education and associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Previously as medical director for strategic initiatives at Pfizer Health Solutions, he gained extensive exposure to disease management initiatives both nationally and internationally. Dr. Wolf has also served as senior medical director of the northeast region for Aetna in Hartford, Conn., where he was responsible for Aetna’s medical management initiatives.

Dr. Wolf is a graduate of Union College and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency at the University of Connecticut and also served as Chief Resident at Hartford Hospital. In addition to his medical education, Dr. Wolf has a master in public health degree from the University of Connecticut.

Last year SPHS and its parent organization, Catholic Health East, became part of Trinity Health, a change which resulted in the Sisters of Providence deeding over their ownership of their local legacy healthcare system to the new entity. In doing so they positioned the local Catholic healthcare system which they founded to be more financially viable in the future by becoming part of a larger national organization.

Trinity Health – New England is an integrated health care delivery system formed by last year’s changes and is a member of Trinity Health, Livonia, MI, one of the nation’s largest multi-institutional Catholic health care delivery systems.

SPHS includes Mercy Medical Center, a 182-bed acute care hospital in Springfield; Providence Behavioral Health Hospital, located in Holyoke and licensed for 126 beds; Weldon Rehabilitation Hospital, a comprehensive hospital-based rehabilitation center on the campus of Mercy Medical Center; Brightside for Families and Children, an outpatient service offering counseling and family support programs; two outpatient substance abuse treatment centers; and Mercy Continuing Care Network that includes skilled nursing facilities, residential  care facilities, an adult day health program, Mercy Homecare, Mercy Hospice and Mercy LIFE, a program of all-inclusive care for the elderly.

In addition to SPHS entities, Trinity Health-New England is also comprised of Saint Francis Hospital and Medical Center, an anchor institution in north central Connecticut since 1897. Licensed for 617 beds and 62 bassinets, it is a major teaching hospital and the largest Catholic hospital in New England. Other major entities include Mount Sinai Rehabilitation Hospital, the Connecticut Joint Replacement Institute, the Hoffman Heart and Vascular Institute of Connecticut, Smilow Cancer Hospital Yale-New Haven at Saint Francis, the Joyce D. and Andrew J. Mandell Center for Comprehensive Multiple Sclerosis Care and Neuroscience Research, and Saint Francis HealthCare Partners, along with Johnson Memorial Hospital, Johnson Health Care, Inc., and Home and Community Health Services, a home health care and hospice agency.
