OBITUARY: Sister Loretta Scarlett, SSJ

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Sister of St. Joseph Loretta Scarlett, 88, known in religion as Sister Vincent Joseph, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Bethany Health Care Center in Framingham on Nov. 16. A native of South Barre, Mass., she was the daughter of George and Loretta (Despres) Scarlett.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Thomas Parish, South Barre, in 1948. She graduated from Barre High School and earned a bachelor of srts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms College in Chicopee.

She ministered in the Springfield Diocese at the former Cathedral Grammar, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, St. Matthew and Holy Name schools, Springfield, and at St. Agnes School, Dalton. She served in the Diocese of Worcester, Mass., at St. Mary School, Southbridge, St. Joseph School, North Brookfield, and at Sacred Heart, Gardner as principal and as pastoral associate. She also was a member of the support staff at Mont Marie in Holyoke.

In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by two nieces and a nephew. She was preceded in death by her parents and her siblings, Joseph Gallant and Dorina Bernard.

Services will take place in St. Joseph Chapel at Mont Marie in Holyoke on Tuesday, Nov. 20. She will be waked from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with a prayer service at 10 a.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery in Holyoke.
