OBITUARY: Sister Mary Immaculata, OP

HOLYOKE – Dominican Sister Mary Immaculata, 94, of the Dominican Nuns in West Springfield, died on Friday, May 18 at Mt. St. Vincent Care Center in Holyoke, after a long illness.

She was born on March 27, 1924 in Worcester, MA and was the daughter of the late Fernando and Margaret Mary (Peard) Goulet. She was educated in parochial schools in Worcester, Mass., and graduated from high school in 1942. In 1949, she entered the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God in West Springfield.

Over the years Sister Immaculata worked in the altar bread department, the kitchen, the spiritual bouquet department, and in the linen room. She also sewed habits for the sisters and, especially in her later years, spent hours making rosaries for the general public, asking only for a donation to cover the cost of materials.

As portress, she also had many opportunities to assist those who came to the monastery for various matters. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by six siblings: Augusta Goulet, Alice Goulet (known in religion as Sister of St. Joseph Margaret), Joseph Goulet, Fernando Goulet, Sylvia Goulet, and Rita Goulet. Known to her family as “Theresa,” she leaves a brother, Robert Goulet, of Framingham, Mass.; a sister, Ann Wesolowski, of Holden, Mass.; and many devoted nieces and nephews and their families, along with other relatives and friends.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held at the Dominican Monastery, 1430 Riverdale St., West Springfield, MA on Wednesday, May 23 at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be at the monastery from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, West Springfield.
