CHICOPEE – College of Our Lady of the Elms has announced that it will present the 2018 Via Veritatis Medal to William F. Frain during its 87th commencement exercises in May in recognition of his dedication to education, children, and the less fortunate.

Although Frain has enjoyed a long and successful career in financial services, according to a press release issued by the college April 30, “his true legacy will be defined by his generosity, leadership, and lifelong commitment to education and service.”

As a board member for Friends of the Homeless, Frain has been instrumental in enhancing the lives of thousands of struggling citizens in the Springfield area with his support, compassion, and dedication. The father of an adopted son, Frain felt a deep commitment to adoption, which led him to the board of directors at Downey Side Adoption Agency, where he watched it grow from a small office in Springfield, to a national agency.

As a two-time Elms College board member, the press release stated, “Frain’s passion and work ethic have brought astounding success to the college’s already stellar reputation. Through his continued support, he has ensured the success of the college and its students for years to come.
“Having received a scholarship himself, Frain passed the gift of affordable education on to countless students through his endowed scholarship at Elms.”

He most recently demonstrated his commitment to an Elms education through his sponsorship of the Academic Tutoring and Advising Suite in the Center for Student Success, a vital learning space in Alumnae Library that gives all students the assistance they need to achieve their goals and aspirations.

The press release further stated, “As a brilliant worker, loving father, and advocate for the poor, William Frain exemplifies the nature of service to others and the impact of charitable deeds.”

The Via Veritatis Medal recognizes an outstanding Catholic who exemplifies Catholic life and culture at their best, and who has made significant contributions to society. The name of the medal, Via Veritatis (“Way of Truth”), comes from the college’s motto: Viam Veritatis Elegi (“I have chosen the way of truth”).

Elms College’s 87th commencement ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., and the academic procession will begin at 9:30.
