OBITUARY: Brother Richard Hartling, Holyoke native

ALBANY, N.Y. – Brother Richard Hartling, 90, a member of the Congregation of Holy Cross, died Jan. 5 at Albany Medical Center, Albany, N.Y.

Born and raised in Holyoke, he entered the candidate program of the Brothers of Holy Cross after high school. Brother Richard made his first profession of vows on Feb. 2, 1947.

He earned degrees in education from Fordham University and Siena College and served in a variety of capacities – as a teacher, counselor, staff person – in Holy Cross and diocesan schools and social service institutions. In 1995, he retired to St. Joseph Center, Valatie, N.Y., where he assisted with maintenance needs.

A wake service will be held 7:15 p.m., Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Center Chapel, Valatie. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 11 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 11 in the chapel followed by a luncheon.
