OBITUARY: Sister Ann Mungovan, SSJ

HOLYOKE — Sister of St. Joseph Ann Marie Mungovan 93, formerly known in religion as Sister Margaret John, a member of the Sisters of St Joseph of Springfield, died on Aug. 15 at Mont Marie Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Holyoke.

Born in Worcester, Mass., she was the daughter of John and Margaret (Twomey) Mungovan.

She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from St. Ann Parish, Worcester, in 1941.  She graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Worcester. She earned a bachelor of arts  degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee, and a master of arts degree from Fairfield University.

She taught in the Diocese of Springfield in the following schools: Sacred Heart, Holyoke; St. Joseph, Pittsfield; St. Mary, Northampton, and Cathedral High School, Springfield, where she served for 21 years. She taught in the Diocese of Worcester in the following schools: St. Louis, Webster; Sacred Heart, Gardner; St. Mary, Milford; and St. Peter High School in Worcester.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, John and Joseph Mungovan; and her sisters, Elizabeth Millus, Mary Seil and Marguerite Eastwood. In addition to her sisters in community, she is survived by her nieces and nephews.

All services for Sister Ann will take place in St. Joseph Chapel at Mont Marie on Tuesday, Aug. 22. She will be waked from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., with a prayer service at 10. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery.
