OBITUARY: Sister Mary Caroline Mador, SP

HOLYOKE – Sister of Providence Mary Caroline Mador, died on Aug. 4 in the 58th year of her religious life.  

Born Caroline Lillianne Mador in North Grosvenordale, Conn., on Oct. 2, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Ernest J. and Corinne (Plouffe) Mador.

Sister Mador entered the Sisters of Providence congregation in 1959 after graduating from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in North Grosvenordale. In 1962, she furthered her education at the Fanny Farmer’s School of Cookery in Boston and then served as the cook at the Our Lady of Providence Convent in Boston, the residence for Sisters of Providence pursuing education in the area. In 1964, she returned to the Providence Mother House in Holyoke where she ministered as a seamstress, making the religious habits for the sisters, and then as a driver for the Sisters for over 20 years. She served next as the assistant sacristan at the Providence Mother House until her retirement in 2000.

For many years, Sister Mador supported Sisters Aura Ninfa Aurellano and Mary of the Immaculate Conception with their Hispanic ministry in Holyoke. She had a natural love of music that she expressed through playing the piano and accordion. She was fluent in French, which she enjoyed speaking and sharing throughout her life.

She is survived by her sisters in community; her sisters, Mignonne Garceau, Therese Duwell and Rachel Gregory; her brother, Jean Mador; and many nieces and nephews.

The wake will be held on Monday, Aug. 7 from 3-7 p.m. at Providence Place, 5 Gamelin St., Holyoke, with a wake service at 6:30 p.m. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Aug. 8 at 9:30 a.m. in the Providence Place Chapel.
