OBITUARY: Sister Elizabeth Broughan, SSJ

HOLYOKE – Sister of St. Joseph Elizabeth Broughan (formerly Sister Maureen John), 71, a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield, died at Mary’s Meadow, here on Feb. 5.

Born in Greenfield, she was the daughter of John and Mary (McDevitt) Broughan. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield from Blessed Sacrament Parish, Greenfield in 1963. She graduated from Greenfield High School. She earned a bachelor of arts degree from the College of Our Lady of the Elms, Chicopee and a master of arts degree from Boston College.

She taught at St. Mary High School, Milford, Mass., and St. Mary High School, Westfield, where she also served as principal. She was dean of students and later dean of admissions and financial aid at Elms College. She served in campus ministry at the Newman Catholic Center at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and later worked in pastoral ministry at St. Patrick Parish, Springfield. For the last 15 years, she has been a pastoral associate at St. Michael Parish, East Longmeadow.

In addition to her sisters in community she is survived by her sisters, Sister of St. Joseph  Maureen Broughan of Holyoke and Mary Winchell of Glen Ridge, N.J.; by her brothers, John W. Broughan of Newport, R.I., and William Broughan of Greenbrae, Calif.; and by six nieces and nephews and six grandnieces and nephews.

All services for Sister Elizabeth will take place in St. Michael Church, 128 Maple St., East Longmeadow. She will be waked on Friday, Feb. 10 from 4-8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9-10:30 a.m.. The Liturgy of Christian Burial will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Mont Marie Cemetery, Holyoke.
